At the start of 2014 I entered the Professional Photographer magazine’s Photographer of the year competition. This is a competition that i have entered before, in 2012 I was really please to come second in the News category and never really thought i would better that given that there are so many great photographers and thousands of images entered into the competition every year.
To be told that I won the travel category this year was a total shock as there were over 450 entries in this category alone, i still keep asking myself, really! did i really win!. The judge for this category was Photographer Ben Duffy he said “Travel photography is about capturing the ambience and character of a destination. Working with the unpredictability of nature, Simon was still able to capture a truly magical scene.”
I took the photograph on a trip to what has become one of my favorite places in the world Iceland, it was at the end of a long day visiting diverse landscapes, hoping that we would see a light show. After a 2 hour journey into the north of the country we stopped turn off the lights and watched in awe at the display, which to be honest only lasted around 10 minutes at the most. It was truly a moment of being in the right place at the right time. I really can’t wait to go back.
This is a rarity, me in a photograph from the front, not the back of my head which is normally how i am captured by wedding guests. From Left Professional Photographer Magazines Editor Adam Scorey, Judge of the category Ben Duffy, Category Sponsor One Vision Limited and Me.
